what category of effect does this fit into?

Distortion/Fuzz - plays like a distortion but sounds like a fuzz, sort of blurs the lines between the two. I feel it takes the best of both worlds and mashes them in two.

how would I describe the feel and texture?

This is a big muff- but it definitely has a much different attitude and texture. I feel like it has more of a raspiness and buzz in the high frequencies while maintaining a pretty massive and smooth, not so compressed and clipped low end. It feels like it has less saturation/gain, but more volume than a standard muff. The tone control is straight magic. It has way more range and nuance than the standard muff tone control.

The boost side is a treble boost- it sort of cuts/tightens low and and really brightens up the top end.

what kind of player would like this stompbox?

the fuzz war was the poster child for psych rock and garage rock for a long while. notably used by ty segal, and charles moothart of fuzz. It definitely wants to be loud and aggressive. It is good for loud music as again- it has more volume than natural saturation so into an already hot amp, it actually pushes it into its own gain, allowing for your amps natural drive to come alive.

of course, its is a great doom/sludge/stoner pedal as well.

features/mods

Boost side- the boost volume knob has been modified so that at minimum volume it does not completely kill signal.

Toggle mod- in the original circuit, the boost side actually has volume drop, even when set to max. I added a toggle that engages a proper amplification stage to actually use the boost side as a real boost. You can also bypass this gain stage and experience the boost side stock.

9v-18v, center negative operation. around 20ma current draw.
